Solano Restaurant &
Food Businesses

Sugar Industry Cluster:

Fairfield has been successful in creating a cluster of sugar food companies.  Factories such as, Jelly Belly, Guittard Chocolate and Thomson Candy Company have facilities in Fairfield.  Fairfield was touted as the ideal location due to its proximity to both the San Francisco and Sacramento areas.

Bento Box of America:

NRE World Bento, INC.

NRE World Bento, INC. located at Watney Way in Fairfield, provides and exports “Bento” boxes to Japan.

These Japanese styled lunches, called  ” Bento” boxes, contain grilled fish, pickles, or meat and vegetables and organically grown rice from Solano County.  Animal protein is added to the rice to avoid the high tariffs Japan levies on imported pure California rice.  These  “Bento@ boxes are frozen and shipped frozen across the Pacific to be sold at train stations in Japan.  They are the only known exporter of such prepared foods to Japan.  They are also seriously interested in organic foods.  Bento Box of America is just another example of how Solano Economic Development Corp was successful in attracting a large employer.

Solano Agriculture as Choice Location For Organic Farms:

Solano's proximity to San Francisco and its high demand for fresh organic foods makes the county an ideal location for setting up more organic farms.  Watch for future developments in this area.  Fairfield City Council Member, Jack Batson is strongly committed to working with the general agricultural sector of Fairfield and the rest of Solano County.

Solano Retailing of Organic Vegetables and Fruits:

Food retailers are gaining increased interest in organic foods.  Trader Joe's in Fairfield is competing with Raley's for the same market seeking healthy organic vegetables and fruits, plus fancy gourmet foods.  Raley's in Suisun City and Fairfield can carry a wider choice from organic tomatoes and zucchinis, to potatoes, lettuces and some fruits.  Trader Joe's focuses on gourmet food items. Solano consumers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their healthy food choices.

Solano's Fast Food Chains:

Take the As@ out of Fast Food, and you get AFat Food@.  There's increasing talk about how fast food chains are getting consumers addicted to fatty foods.  Long-term predictions are for an upswing in consumer and government sentiment against companies selling fatty foods.  The major fast food chains make tremendous profit margins; they pay little for the junk food in bulk.  Profit margins at healthier food stores can be lower.  Many fast food chains have started to include healthy choices in their menus, with more chains planning to do so.

Solano School District in Fairfield & Suisun

A possible Ajunk food tax@ is discussed throughout the U.S. There's growing talk of increasing the choice of healthy foods, while limiting the junk foods that many children grow up preferring.  The cities of Vacaville, Dixon and Rio Vista are also beginning to consider the same.  Children need to be educated on nutrition.  Food preferences are molded at an early age, which is why fast food chains work so hard to get contracts to serve school lunches outside Solano County.

Growing Popularity of Solano’s Healthy Food Restaurants:

New restaurants considering a Solano location should consider the growing market for those who realize being Atrim is in@.

The expansion of healthy restaurants, Solano hiking trails and exercise gyms cater to the pro-health population.  Healthy food choices from organic to vegetarian menus, already common in the inner San Francisco Bay Area, are increasingly seen in Solano County restaurants.  The centers of Solano's cities and towns are the best places to locate ethnic and health food restaurants.  A new owner wishing to capitalize on Solano’s health food market purchased the healthy Subway Sandwiches on Fairfield's West Texas Street.

New health food and quality restaurants include Fresh Choice in Fairfield and Vacaville.  And Old Town Suisun has its charming Grind Coffee Shop & Cafe, the Athenian Grill, and other choice restaurants close to their live drama theater on the waterfront.  Try the many other locations too.
